Europe Day, celebrated annually on May 9th, commemorates the 1950 Schuman Declaration—a pivotal moment in European political history that proposed a new form of political cooperation. More than just a historical marker, it represents a day to celebrate shared European unity, culture, and connections, reflecting on common histories, achievements, and challenges.

Currently it is treated like an ordinary workday in most countries. But the day marks an opportunity to promote understanding across European cultures, encourage dialogue about European identity, and build a stronger, more inclusive community.

The European Cultura Foundation's #MyEuropeDayOff campaign seeks to transform that day from a bureaucratic footnote into a meaningful celebration, inviting citizens to reimagine what it means to be European and to actively participate in defining continental identity.

The campaign bridges the gap between institutional Europe and everyday citizens by providing a platform for collective reflection, showcasing the diversity and unity of European experiences, and potentially influencing decision-makers to recognize Europe Day as an official public holiday

Fundamentally, it's a grassroots effort to breathe life into European unity, allowing people to actively participate in defining and celebrating what it means to be European in a deeply personal and inclusive manner. By inviting citizens to share personal stories and reimagine May 9th the initiative aims to create shared symbols, promote democratic engagement, and increase cultural awareness across the continent.
