Across Europe, cities and towns celebrate Europe Day from May 5-12 with a diverse range of cultural events, public debates, and exhibitions under the theme "Anyone Can Europe Day."
Europe Day commemorates the anniversary of the historic 1950
Schuman Declaration, which laid out a vision for a new era of political cooperation across the continent in the wake of World War II. It has been celebrated annually on May 9 since 1985.
This year's "Anyone Can Europe Day" theme is a rallying cry for the idea that all residents of Europe can participate in shaping the continent's shared future, regardless of national, cultural or other backgrounds.
Over 300 events are planned across over 20 European countries. Highlights include:
Debates and workshops in Paris, Brussels and Berlin on the future of the European Union
Street festivals celebrating Europe's cultural diversity in Madrid, Rome and Amsterdam
Exhibitions on European integration history in Warsaw, Prague and Budapest
Youth forums discussing climate action across the continent
Despite rising euroskeptic populism in some nations, the Europe Day organizers emphasize Europe's core values of inclusion, democracy and dialogue.
"Through events like these, we can grow a stronger European community with a shared commitment to our future and that of generations to come," the European Cultural Foundation's website that aggregated the events states. "For anyone can Europe Day! Will you?"
