“We’re going to do that too" said president Macron, commenting on the status of UNESCO Cultural Heritage, which was granted in 2024 to Berlin techno.
"I love Germany — you know how pro-European I am. But we don’t have to take lessons from anyone. We are the inventors of electro. We have that French touch" he continued, according to Euronews.
French touch was a global trend mainly in the nineties, with Daft Punk as its most influential representatives. The group of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo achieved a massive impact on international music and established the French Touch signature sound. Wearing robot masks and gloves, they released their first record “Homework” in 1997. They imposed their distinctive combination of disco, funk, house and techno, taking the lead in the dance music scene. Their last major success was the world hit “Get Lucky” (2013).
If added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List, the French touch is to be included in the expressions of living heritage under protection status, such as Jamaican reggae or Cuban rumba.
So far, the list of UNESCO’s files under process for the 2025 cycle, do not include a file for French Touch.
The French President’s interview was aired on FG - Fréquence Gaie Radio at the opportunity of the closure of the first France Music Week (16th to 21st June) and the celebrations of 21 June - Music Day, the French “Fête de la Musique”.
