About the Inclusive European Heritage Residency 2025

Europa Nostra, in partnership with the National Trust (UK) and INTO – International National Trusts Organisation, invites applications for the first Inclusive European Heritage Residency, taking place from 14–20 June 2025 at Hardwick Hall, on the edge of the Peak District, Derbyshire. This new residency takes inspiration from the National Trust’s 10-year strategy "People and Nature Thriving", using the Whole Estate Plan (WEP) at Hardwick Hall as a live case study. Participants will engage with topics such as heritage storytelling, public access, community engagement, conservation skills, and restoration of natural environments.

Throughout the week, participants will contribute to a “live brief”, a collaborative proposal for the future of Hardwick, which will be presented to local stakeholders and Hardwick personnel for potential inclusion in ongoing estate planning.

What to Expect

Over the course of the residency, participants will take part in a rich, immersive programme based at Hardwick Hall and its surrounding estate. Through hands-on workshops, site visits, and peer-led discussions, the group will explore inclusive storytelling, intergenerational dialogue, practical conservation skills, and the role of heritage in restoring natural environments. The residency will focus on Hardwick’s Whole Estate Plan, using it as a case study to examine how heritage places can better serve people and nature. Participants will collaborate on a live brief, developing proposals for the site’s future, which they will present to Hardwick’s team and peers. The programme is designed to foster knowledge exchange, critical reflection, and action-oriented learning in a collaborative and supportive environment.

Why Apply

This residency offers a unique opportunity to connect with peers, explore the intersection of people, place, and nature, and contribute directly to a heritage site’s strategic planning. Participants will gain valuable knowledge, inspiration, and skills they can apply to projects in their local contexts.

-  All accommodation, meals, and local transport covered
- Hosted in historic Hardwick Hall and surrounding cottages
- Practical sessions with experts in conservation and estate planning

Selected applicants will be notified by May 5, 2025
