The Council of Europe has launched a publication celebrating its 75-year history through a collection of historic posters, highlighting the organisation's pivotal role in European peacebuilding and cultural understanding.
Titled “When Posters Speak Out”, the publication was unveiled by Luxembourg's Presidency of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers at the National and University Library in Strasbourg.
The exhibition showcases 100 carefully selected posters from over a thousand in the organisation's archives, tracing its journey since 1949 when ten founding member states, including Luxembourg, established the Council.
“These posters are more than just images,” said Luxembourg's Ambassador Patrick Engelberg. “They're powerful communication tools that document the Council's milestones and key activities over seven and a half decades.”
The publication coincides with two significant anniversaries: the Council of Europe's 75th birthday and the 70th anniversary of the 1954 European Cultural Convention. This convention aims to promote cultural diversity and mutual understanding among European nations.
Currently uniting 46 countries, the Council of Europe continues to champion human rights, democracy, and the rule of law through its diverse cultural initiatives.
“Sifting through the archives, curating and staging the exhibition, and producing this publication underlines our unwavering commitment to this vibrant organisation, which, at 75 years young, remains so active in championing the fundamental principles of human rights, the rule of law and democracy”, Engelberg added.
