The European Film Academy is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting European cinema. Founded in 1988, the Academy seeks to support and connect its 5,000 members and celebrates and promotes their work. Its aims are to share knowledge and to educate audiences of all ages about European cinema. Positioning itself as a leading organisation and facilitating crucial debates within the industry, the Academy strives to unite everyone who loves European cinema, culminating annually in the Month of European Film and the European Film Awards, by including European film heritage in its portfolio and by expanding its focus on young audiences through the European Film Club.
European Film Academy Productions
Founded in 2006 to produce the European Film Awards Ceremony for television, European Film Academy Productions gGmbH is the in-house production company of the European Film Academy e.V.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the 2026 European Film Awards, submitted films must:
- Be directed by a European filmmaker
- Have their first official screening (festival or cinema release) between 1 June 2024 and 30 September 2025
- Be produced in a European country (including EU and non-EU nations, Israel, and Palestine)
- Be intended for theatrical release
- Meet the specific criteria for their respective award category
Eligibility for individual nominees:
Filmmakers must be born in Europe or hold a European passport. Non-European artists may be considered if they have a European refugee or similar status or have worked in the European film industry for at least five consecutive years.
