About Noorderlicht Biennale 2025: Machine Entanglements
The Noorderlicht Biennale explores the relationship between technology, ecology, and heritage. We are seeking work that critically reflects on these themes and examines the impact of technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) on our society and environment. The selected works will be presented during the biennale in the summer of 2025 at various locations in the three Northern provinces of the Netherlands: Friesland, Groningen, and Drenthe.
The 2025 biennale invites artists to explore two main themes:
Connected Landscapes: Artworks will delve into how technology intersects with natural and urban spaces, influencing biodiversity, sustainability, and ethical practices. Exhibited in Friesland.
Heritage Futures: This theme encourages exploration of colonial heritage through a contemporary lens, inviting critical perspectives on social inequality, justice, and technology's role in reshaping the future. Exhibited in Groningen and Drenthe.
Submission Requirements
Artists of all career stages are welcome to submit, including works in progress. Selection is based on artistic quality, thematic relevance, and originality. Successful applicants will receive a fee in line with kunstenaarshonorarium.nl guidelines.
Submission Details
Submit a PDF (max 10 MB and 10 pages) or JPG files for photo series, along with a 200-word text, visual samples, and a recent CV. Video files may be sent separately (max 20 MB). Submissions should be emailed to opencall2025@noorderlicht.com.
