About the Fellowship
A fully funded relocation and fellowship programme designed to protect and support artists and cultural practitioners at risk. The Martin Roth Initiative facilitates a temporary safe stay in Germany in cooperation with a local host organisation, enabling participants to continue their artistic work and advocacy.
- Fellowships typically last 6–12 months and include support such as:
- Monthly scholarship and living stipend
- Accommodation assistance
- Visa and travel support
- Insurance and integration support
- Project collaboration with a German cultural institution
Each fellow is matched with a host organisation that provides both artistic collaboration and personal support throughout the stay.
Eligibility Criteria
Who can apply: Artists, writers, curators, performers, and cultural professionals from any country except citizens or permanent residents of EU/EEA countries, Australia, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA.
Eligible Applicants:
- through their artistic work commit to an open society, freedom, peace and democracy, who reject any kind of discrimination and who, because of their work or due to other circumstances, experience restrictions on their freedom or threats from state and/or non-state actors
- are still active in their countries of origin, have only recently left their countries of origin (departure after the deadline of the last call for applications by the MRI on the 20/02/2026), or are not safe in their current locations
- do not have access to a safe abode (e.g. due to dual citizenship or permanent residency by means of a national or humanitarian visa),
- speak English or German
- who are demonstrably artistically/culturally active and whose works have a proven artistic/cultural and/or social relevance (hobby artists or persons who undertake purely private artistic activities are not eligible for funding)
