The African cultural festivals and events across Europe offer a unique opportunity to experience the vibrant and diverse cultures of Africa and its diaspora. They promote cultural exchange and understanding, celebrate diversity and inclusion, and showcase the power of music, art, and culture to bring people together.

One of the largest is Afro Pfingsten in Winterthur, Switzerland, which runs from June 7 to 9. The festival features over 60 musical acts, dance performances, and DJs from more than 20 African nations. Headliners this year include Nigerian Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti, South African house music producer Black Coffee, and Ivorian reggae star Tiken Jah Fakoly.

In the UK, the popular Africa Oyé festival returns to Liverpool on June 22 and 23. The free event showcases established and emerging artists from across Africa and the diaspora. This year's lineup highlights the diversity of African music, including everything from Somali hip hop to Ethiopian jazz to Zimbabwean pop.

Afronation 2023, a collection of music festivals centered around beach locales and African music, will be held from June 28 to June 30, 2023. The festival, which has gained significant popularity in recent years, showcases a wide range of African musical talent and provides a lively atmosphere for attendees.  A non-exhaustive guide to African cultural events across the continent follows:

 

GERMANY

  • African Futures – All Around, a project of the City of Cologne in cooperation with the Global South Studies Center (GSSC, University of Cologne), will take place from June 1 to June 11, 2023. This comprehensive program offers over 70 events that highlight the complexity, multi-faceted nature, and creativity of modern Africa, engaging citizens in various activities and discussions.

  • In Germany, the International African Festival Tübingen will be held from August 1 to August 4, 2023. This event celebrates African culture through music, dance, and art, featuring live performances by African artists, as well as workshops and exhibitions that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the continent. The festival also includes a vibrant African market, where visitors can purchase traditional crafts, clothing, and food.

  • The Africa Festival in Würzburg, Germany, will be held from May 31 to June 3, 2024. This event is one of the largest African cultural festivals in Europe, featuring live performances by African artists, as well as workshops and exhibitions that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the continent. FRANCE 

  • In France, the Festival Nuits d'Afrique de Paris will take place from July 11 to July 21, 2023. The festival includes concerts, workshops, and exhibitions, providing a rich cultural experience for attendees.

  • Also in France, the Festival Africolor in Paris is an annual event that celebrates African and Caribbean music The festival features live performances by African and Caribbean artists, as well as workshops and exhibitions that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the continent and its diaspora.

  • The African Diaspora International Film Festival (ADIFF) in Paris, France, will take place from November 29 to December 9, 2023. This event is dedicated to showcasing films that explore the experiences of people of African descent around the world. The festival screens a diverse selection of films, including feature films, documentaries, and short films, and hosts panel discussions and workshops with filmmakers and industry professionals.

 

BELGIUM

  • The Afro-Latino Festival in Bree, Belgium, scheduled for July 12-14, 2023, is another event that showcases the fusion of African and Latin American cultures. The festival features live music, dance performances, and workshops, highlighting the unique blend of African and Latin American influences in music, dance, and art.

  • Also in Belgium, the Festival Couleur Café in Brussels is an annual event that celebrates the cultural diversity of the city. The festival features live music, dance performances, and workshops, with a special focus on African and Caribbean culture.

 

SPAIN

  • In Spain, the Rototom Sunsplash festival, held in Benicàssim from August 16 to August 22, 2023, is a week-long celebration of reggae music and culture. The festival includes performances by African and Caribbean artists, as well as workshops, discussions, and film screenings that explore the connections between Africa, the Caribbean, and Europe.

  • If you're looking for a truly unique experience, the Afro-Latino Festival in Madrid is an event not to be missed. Taking place from October 8 to October 10, 2023, this festival celebrates the African and Latin American diaspora through music, dance, and visual arts. 

  • Also in Spain, the Festival de Músicas del Mundo in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is an annual event that celebrates world music, with a special focus on African and Latin American culture. The festival features live performances by international artists, as well as workshops and exhibitions that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the world.

  • The African Film Festival of Cordoba, Spain, also known as FCAT (Festival de Cine Africano de Tarifa-Tánger), will take place from October 18 to October 26, 2023.
