About the Open Call
Halaqat invites artists to apply for its new residency programme, taking place between January and September 2026 in Lebanon, Morocco, Jordan, and Egypt. Artists from the artistic fields of: Music and Sound, Visual Arts (e.g., painting, installation, sculpture), Digital and New Media Arts, Performing Arts (e.g., dance, theatre), Comics & Graphic Novels, Literary Arts (e.g., poetry, storytelling) and Interdisciplinary & socially engaged practices are encouraged to submit individual projects exploring the themes of care and gender.
Eight residencies will be hosted by seven local institutions (Amalgam – Lebanon, Hunna Art & Culture Center – Lebanon, Drum Jam – Jordan, Queens Collective – Morocco, Irtijal – Tassarout Third Place – Morocco, Fondation Hiba – Morocco, Goethe-Institut Cairo – Egypt) working across diverse artistic fields.
About Halaqat
Halaqat, which is the Arabic term for ‘multiple links and circles’, provides a space for cultural actors from Arab and European countries to artistically reflect on topics of care, exploring them through a gender lens.
Launched in 2021, the project fosters exchange between Europe and Arab countries and is, in its second phase from 2024 to 2027, supporting the cultural scenes especially in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Morocco.
Exploring the Notion of Care: In this phase Halaqat explores the notion of ‘care’, a concept which is deeply related to gender topics in both regions and tackles the question of gender equity and sensitivity and the power dynamics in an inclusive and intersectional way.
Eligibility Criteria:
- You are at least 18 years old
- You have a public track record in the relevant artistic field
- You submit a project aligned with the themes of gender and care
- You are available for the full duration of the residency
- You meet the host-specific eligibility criteria (some are for mothers, musicians, etc.)
- You are willing to participate in a public event during the residency (e.g., work-in-progress presentation, artist talk, workshop, etc).
You also need to fulfill one of the following geographic eligibility conditions:
- You are from and based in one of the following focus countries: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia .This includes nationals or long-term residents.
- Υou are based in an EU Member State, and you can demonstrate strong engagement with the Arab region through past or ongoing artistic collaborations within the last three years.
What funding is available?
- €2,950 for a 3-month residency
- €1,750 for a 6-week residency
Additional support may include:
- Up to €1,000 for production
- Up to €250 for showcasing preparation (Top-ups (case-by-case) for: Family responsibilities, Accessibility needs, Visa costs)
