A Valletta court in Malta convicted two men for supplying the military-grade explosives that were used to kill Daphne Caruana Galicia on 16 October 2017. The two men, Robert Agius (41) and Jamie Vella (42), provided the explosives in exchange for money. They had pleaded not guilty.
The journalist's family stated that although the verdict is "a step closer to justice", "the institutional failures that enabled her murder remain unaddressed and unreformed" eight years later.
The trial date is not set yet for the alleged mastermind of the journalist’s killing, Maltese millionaire Yorgen Fenech. He was arrested in November 2019, while he was trying to flee the country with his yacht. He is free from jail since January 2025, when he was granted a bail with €50m as a guarantee.
Yorgen Fenech and Joseph Muscat, then Prime Minister were among the powerful elites of the country reported as involved in major corruption scandals by the killed journalist. The Prime Minister resigned from office in 2019, after extensive rallies against his perceived efforts to shield his inner circle from investigations over her murder.
Three more men are in jail over the journalist’s assassination. In 2022, the brothers George and Alfred Degiorgio pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 40 years prison time.
Another accomplice, Vince Muscat (not related to the country’s then Prime Minister) received a 15-year sentence after confessing and providing key information, which led to the brothers.
