As cultural institutions in the Netherlands and around the world grapple with funding cuts, political pressures and global uncertainty, four prominent Dutch organisations have joined forces to create a new centre for international cultural cooperation. Cultural Emergency Response (CER), DutchCulture, the European Cultural Foundation (ECF) and the Prince Claus Fund have announced the launch of Domo, a joint initiative aimed at strengthening cross-border cultural collaboration.
The co-founders of Domo believe in the power of culture to inspire resilience and change, so Domo's mission is to inspire, empower and connect individuals, communities and organisations across borders. As they mention, "although the cultural sector is under increasing pressure, the need for dialogue, collaboration and solidarity has never been more urgent".
Located at Nieuwe Herengracht 14 in Amsterdam, within the H’ART Museum complex, Domo will serve as a public space, a platform for ideas, and a catalyst for cultural exchange. The initiative will host year-round events and collaborative programmes, designed to foster dialogue, solidarity, and action across national and cultural boundaries. CER, DutchCulture, and ECF already share offices at the site, with the Prince Claus Fund set to join them later this year. The public space will officially open in 2026.
“We remain distinct organisations, but a common urgency drives us.” said Sanne Letschert, Director of CER. “What started as a shared office has grown into a shared vision. Together we' re creating a public space
to amplify international cultural cooperation in Amsterdam”.
Domo—meaning “home” in several languages—reflects the initiative’s core mission: to be both a physical space and a global community that supports cultural actors and encourages sustainable international partnerships. At a time when the cultural sector faces increasing strain, Domo aims to ensure that international collaboration not only endures but flourishes.
The launch of Domo comes amid a growing recognition of culture’s role in fostering resilience, unity, and social change. Its founding partners are known for their commitment to supporting cultural initiatives in challenging contexts:
• Cultural Emergency Response (CER) delivers fast, locally-led support to protect culture in crisis, advocating for the role of cultural rescue in humanitarian response.
• European Cultural Foundation (ECF) promotes solidarity and democratic values across Europe through cultural initiatives that foster belonging and cooperation.
• DutchCulture serves as the national platform for international cultural collaboration, connecting artists, organisations, and governments to empower cultural exchange.
• Prince Claus Fund supports artists and cultural practitioners working under pressure, investing in a more equitable, sustainable, and inclusive future through culture.
Domo’s event programme will be announced in the coming months.
