A digitalised collection of documents about epidemics from the Historical Archives of Compagnia di San Paolo

An early example of social assistance.

Fondazione 1563 per l’Arte e la Cultura, that is in charge of the preservation and the enhancement of the Historical Archives of Compagnia di San Paolo, has curated a digital historical story focused on the so called “Divin Flagello”, the plague that heavily hit the city of Turin (Italy) from 1598 to 1600.

An accurate selection of documents and images from the digitalised archives illustrates how the members of Compagnia di San Paolo generously took care of the sick people by developing a series of measures, including giving alms to the poor and creating hospitals,  in order to try to manage the health emergency.
