A residency in Brussels explores how urban space can be reclaimed and managed through artistic-driven approaches

City Mine(d) launches a call for contributors for a Deep Work Week on Spatial Practices, a residency that explores how urban space can be reclaimed and managed outside the logics of market speculation and state control. Across Europe, access to space, whether for working, gathering, rehearsing, organising, or simply existing, is increasingly contested. Vacant buildings, informal ateliers, community-run rooms, shared desks, and self-organised venues often represent the last frontiers where collective imagination and civic experimentation can take shape.
This residency aims to question, map, and re-imagine these practices through artistic, architectural, and research-driven approaches.
From 22 February to 1 March 2026, City Mine(d) will bring together 5 international and 3 Brussels-based artists, architects, researchers, thinkers, and practitioners to reflect on how non-market, non-state spaces can be designed, financed, governed, and accessed. Participants will work intensively throughout the week, contribute to a three-day participatory planning workshop, and share work-in-progress materials during a public event on 28 February 2026.
International contributors should have a strong interest in vacant or underused buildings, either through hands-on practice or academic research, and be able to produce within one week a mapping (geographical, conceptual, visual, sonic, narrative or digital) that addresses the themes of the residency.
