Future Materials at the Jan van Eyck Academie supports environmentally conscious art and design practices by promoting research and disseminating knowledge on sustainable materials. This long-term programme departed from the urge to find sustainable alternatives to fossil-based or toxic materials commonly used in arts and design. Eventually it expanded to include any materials that redefine human relations with their environments in terms of equity, repair, and regeneration. The online archive Future Materials Bank currently hosts more than 480 sustainable materials discovered, re-discovered, or invented by artists, designers and other creative practitioners from around the globe.

This new call for two Future Materials Fellows welcomes applications for projects that explore methods and practices that investigate the regenerative potential of waste. Challenging mainstream outlooks that univocally regard discarded materials as something harmful for local and global ecosystems, creative practitioners have been researching and experimenting ways to turn waste streams into something beneficial for environmental and social communities active at the frontiers of climate change. This kind of work necessitates a combination of arts and design radical imagination, a sound understanding of materials chemical composition and behaviours, and critical awareness of their histories, contexts, and global journeys.
