Civitates | Protecting and Expanding Civic Space in Italy

Civitates supports eight civil society organisations in Italy with 30.000 EUR

Italian civil society is facing increasing challenges, including legal harassment, criminalisation of protest, and rising restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly. Against this backdrop, Civitates is offering support to organisations committed to protecting democratic rights and expanding space for civic action. Selected organisations will receive up to €30,000 to implement one-year projects that promote inclusive civic engagement and build resilience against threats to civil liberties.

The call focuses on two core objectives:

- Defending civic space and resisting measures that restrict democratic participation
- Expanding opportunities for civic action through innovation, public engagement, and coalition building

This call is open to non-profit civil society organisations registered in Italy that have a track record of defending fundamental rights, engaging communities, and mobilising public participation.

Civitates aims to support up to 8 projects for one year (with potential no-cost extension) in a maximum amount of 30.000 EUR to selected grantees.

ELIGIBILITY

The call is open to:

- Non-profit organisations based in Italy
- Organisations with demonstrated impact in civic engagement and human rights
- Coalitions and networks, particularly those connecting marginalised groups to broader civic efforts

Political party-affiliated organisations are not eligible.
